Revolut in the Netherlands: plans, costs, pros and cons
The short answer
- Revolut is a bank in an app. Dutch residents get a Dutch IBAN (NL…) and a card. The basic plan is free.
- Good for travel and paying in other currencies. On the free plan, watch the weekend fee and the €1,000 monthly exchange limit.
- There is no public promo code. An invite link rewards the person who invites you, not you.
What Revolut is
A bank you use through an app. In the Netherlands it’s Revolut Bank UAB: licensed in Lithuania, with a Dutch branch in Amsterdam that De Nederlandsche Bank and the AFM also supervise.
- Dutch IBAN. If you live in the Netherlands, your account number starts with NL. You can use it for your salary and direct debits.
- Your money is protected up to €100,000 by the Lithuanian deposit guarantee, not the Dutch one. It works the same way: if the bank fails, you get your money back up to that amount.

After the free allowance, a cash withdrawal costs 2%, at least €1. The ATM owner may charge its own fee on top.
The paid plans mostly add more free cash, no exchange fees and extras like travel cover. For everyday spending in euros, the free plan already does the job.
What’s good
- The free plan is really free, with a Dutch IBAN and a card.
- Paying abroad in another currency uses Revolut’s rate, with no extra fee on weekdays within your monthly allowance.
- Top up with iDEAL from your other Dutch bank. It’s free, but the name on both accounts must match.
Watch out for
- Weekends. On Standard, exchanging money between Friday 17:00 and Sunday 18:00 (US Eastern time) costs 1% extra. Pay in euros or exchange on a weekday.
- The €1,000 monthly exchange limit on Standard. Above it you pay 1%.
- Cash. Only 5 withdrawals or €200 a month are free on Standard.
- Older accounts. If you opened your account before the Dutch branch started, you may still have a Lithuanian IBAN (LT…) until Revolut moves you over.
The invite reward (the “Revolut code”)
There is no public promo code. A “Revolut code” is someone’s personal invite link. Revolut’s terms say the reward goes to the person who invites you, the amount is personal, and it’s shown only in their app. If a site promises “€80 with this code”, be careful: we found no official figure for the Netherlands.
The inviter’s reward can be taken back if a step is undone, for example if the new account is closed within 14 days.
Does the reward differ by country?
Yes. It can depend on the country the new person lives in. Revolut’s own country table lists only Brazil and Mexico; for the Netherlands it’s whatever the invite in the app shows.
No sign-up bonus from the referral programme for you. The person who invites you may get a reward.
- Open a Revolut Personal account for the first time, through the invite link
- Top up from another bank or card
- Order a physical card
- Make the card purchases set in the invite, before its deadline
