SIM-only in the Netherlands: cheapest plans and how to switch
The short answer
- About 10 GB costs from €7.50 a month at smaller brands like Ben and Simyo. Odido's own plans cost about twice as much.
- You need ID, an address in the Netherlands and a bank account. No Dutch bank account yet? Start with a prepaid SIM.
- Keeping your number is free. Your new provider arranges it.
What it costs
A SIM-only plan is just the SIM: calls, texts and data, with no phone. Prices for about 10 GB a month, as shown on each provider’s site on 29 October 2026:
| Provider | Network | About 10 GB | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ben | Odido | €7.50 | 2 years. €8.50 for 1 year, €9.50 if you want to cancel any month |
| Simyo | KPN | €8 | 2 years. €9 for 1 year; a monthly option exists |
| hollandsnieuwe | Vodafone | €10 | Cancel any month |
| Odido | Odido | €16.50 | 2 years |
Calling minutes differ per plan, and prices change often. Check the provider’s site before you order.
Smaller brands use the same masts as the big three: KPN, Odido and Vodafone. Lebara, Youfone and Lycamobile also use KPN; we couldn’t check their prices directly.
Welcome deals we saw: Ben offered free connection (normally €20) and double data. hollandsnieuwe offered 50% off the first year on 2-year plans. Neither showed an end date.
What you need to sign up
- ID. Odido accepts a foreign passport or EU ID card for SIM-only.
- An address in the Netherlands for delivery.
- A bank account in your name. Ben can’t take a foreign IBAN online. Odido takes one only in a shop, with proof you’ve been registered here for at least 6 months. Simyo checks your account with a 1-cent payment and does no credit check.
None of these providers asks for a BSN to order SIM-only.
Just arrived? Get a prepaid SIM, such as Odido’s starter SIM for €10, and switch to a plan once you have a Dutch bank account.
Keeping your number
- Ask your new provider to bring your number over. They arrange it with your old one.
- It’s free. By law, your provider can’t charge you for taking your number with you.
- Your old contract ends when the number moves. Simyo and hollandsnieuwe cancel it for you. If you’re still in a fixed term, the old provider can charge the months that are left.
When can I cancel?
After the first term (usually 1 or 2 years), you can cancel at any time with at most one month’s notice, free of charge. If you leave earlier, you usually pay the months that are left.
Ben: if you ask to move your number more than 120 days before your contract ends, you may pay double for a while or get a new number.
Can I use it in other EU countries?
Yes. Within the EU, calls, texts and data cost the same as at home. It’s meant for travel, not for living abroad, and unlimited plans can have a cap for use abroad.
Can I get an eSIM?
Yes, at Simyo, Ben, Odido and hollandsnieuwe. You scan a QR code instead of waiting for a SIM card in the post.
